MACAULAY WINS ALLIED SURVEYORS SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Callum Macaulay clinched his first ever national title in the 2008 Allied Surveyors Scottish Amateur Championship at Carnoustie.

The 24 year old from Tulliallan fought back from a four hole deficit to defeat Caprington's Steven McEwan in a thrilling final on the famous Angus links before being presented with the trophy from another Carnoustie champion, Paul Lawrie, who followed the action on the final day.

Both finalists were spurred on by a large following from their respective home clubs and it was current SGU Order of Merit leader McEwan who made the early running, taking advantage of Macaulay's poor start to race to a four hole lead after five holes. However, Macaulay bounced back to level the match by the end of the morning round.

The opening few holes of the afternoon round were tight and play was halted for half an hour as thunder and lightning powered its way over the course. The break seemed to favour Macaulay and 20 year old McEwan was swept away by four birdies in the next nine holes from the number one seed, who sealed the match with a 5 and 3 victory.

Former Open champion Lawrie, a great supporter of amateur golf, paid tribute to both finalists and the host venue at the conclusion of the championship.  From what I've seen today, Callum and Steven both look to have great futures on the game.  It's brilliant to have the Championship here at Carnoustie, a course very dear to my heart and I'm sure all competitors here this week will have enjoyed its challenge.
